Graphical Rust program that uses a fractal algorithm to draw a tree of sorts

Overview

rusty-vegetation

Graphical Rust program that uses a fractal algorithm to draw a "tree" of sorts.

To Build and Run

On Linux:

  1. Install build-essentials or the equivalent.
  2. Set up Rust using the following:
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
source $HOME/.cargo/env
rustc --version
  1. cd to the rusty-vegetation root directory, then build and install it by running:
cargo build
cargo install --path .
  1. Run the program:
rusty-vegetation 1 75 9 0.000651041666667 0.0009765625

On Windows:

  1. Install the Visual C++ 2019 Build Tools (command-line), or else full Visual Studio 2019 including C++ workflow.
  2. Install and run rustup, such as using Chocolatey.
  3. cd to the rusty-vegetation root directory, then build and install it by running:
cargo build
cargo install --path .
  1. Run the program:
rusty-vegetation 1 75 9 0.000651041666667 0.0009765625

Command-Line Arguments

The command-line arguments to the program are, in order:

  • The number of trees to generate (effectively limited to 1 at this point)
  • The percentage fill factor to use (0-100)
  • The fractal level to use (7-9 is a good range)
  • The horizontal scaling factor to use (try 1 / 1536, or 0.000651041666667)
  • The vertical scaling factor (try 1 / 1024, or 0.0009765625)

    Version 0.8.1

    Changes:

    • The jpeg decoder gained to ability to utilize the Photometric Interpretation directly instead of relying on a custom APP segment.

    Fixes:

    • A spurious error within the PackBits decoder lead to the incorrect results (wrong bits or errors), based on the maximum size of reads from the underlying reader.
    • Removed a panic path in jpeg decoding, when a feature such as photometric interpretation is not supported. An error is returned instead.

    build(deps): bump rayon from 1.6.0 to 1.6.1

Bumps rayon from 1.6.0 to 1.6.1.

    Changelog

    Sourced from rayon's changelog.

    Release rayon 1.6.1 (2022-12-09)

    • Simplified par_bridge to only pull one item at a time from the iterator, without batching. Threads that are waiting for iterator items will now block appropriately rather than spinning CPU. (Thanks @njaard!)
    • Added protection against recursion in par_bridge, so iterators that also invoke rayon will not cause mutex recursion deadlocks.

    Release rayon-core 1.10.1 (2022-11-18)

    • Fixed a race condition with threads going to sleep while a broadcast starts.
